The origins of the WIRE GAUGE are lost in antiquity but a study of the subject assumes new meaning when the USA and the EC nations confront common markets and common systems of measurements in 1992. This archival paper traces the early evolution of various forms of the WIRE GAUGE during the 19th and 20th centuries, including the expansion of this system into other industries like sheetmetal. The paper is part of the Wire Association’s continuing series of historical research studies.
