The structure and composition of scale on stainless steel wire are examined. Molten salt baths may be used for scale removal, but better material handling and solutions to pollution problems are required before they are applied on a wider basis. Some molten caustic conditioning baths are described along with their mechanisms of oxidation. The automation of wire cleaning processes and future trends in this field are discussed.
