Recent changes at SKF Steel in the production of valve spring steel include termination of the acid open hearth (AOH) process and the the inclusion of the melting and refining (MR) process as of 1980. The MR production process has surpassed the metallurgical quality obtainable in the AOH-process, and has been tuned to attain uniform wire rod of high integrity. Five elements necessary to obtain the best production results are analyzed.
