This paper examines virtual gauge technology (VGT) which takes virtual measurements in wire and cable extrusion applications, including jacketing or sheathing operations. It is designed to overcome hindrances to placement of wall thickness and diameter measurement systems directly after the extruder crosshead. It helps to optimize the extrusion process by using immediate virtual values while comparing real-time cold end values in a time-delayed same-point basis.
