An evaluation of 8” extruder screws using an infra-red (IR) thermometer is explained. The instrumentation, setup, and IR theory are discussed. Tests on the four screws included pressure response, temperature response by IR, melt thermocouple temperature responses, and jacket quality. The evaluation costs and machinery downtime are compared with conventional methods of evaluation.
