A research program to identify steel wire alloys which are resistant to the formation of untempered marsenite or other products which result in transformations that embrittle the wire surface is described. Alloy selection, alloy and wire characterization, simulated-service evaluation, metallurgical analysis, and mechanical evaluation of abraded wire are discussed.
