The objectives of the paper are to give a greater understanding of the way in which lubricants function and to highlight the need to improve lubricant performance to keep abreast with advancing technology in copper wire production. The ramifications of the changes in production of copper wire over the last five to ten years are discussed in detail. Basic formulations for lubricants are linked to their associated performance properties, e.g. the mode of lubricant performance.
