Relationships between heat treatment of high carbon wire and steel grain are demonstrated quantitatively. Heating for austenitization, growth of austenitic grains, isothermal transformation in patenting, and patenting are discussed. Isothermal TTT diagrams are presented for coarse and fine grained steel of varying C and Mn content.
